Audience Reviews for Take the Lead. The sole reason for seeing this film: Antonio Banderas in a charismatic lead role, and looking like he was born in a tuxedo. I'm a sucker for Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, George and Ira Gershwin, and Jerome Kern.
The fox-trot and merengue make me smile. Maybe that's why a film inspired by the true story of Manhattan dance instructor Pierre Dulaine had such initial appeal for me. It's also a warmhearted, often wacky teen comedy, about girls who used to be close but grew apart: Bailey is a bohemian lesbian and latchkey kid raised by a single mom, while Veronica joined a clique of popular, well-to-do. "Take the Lead" begins with rudeness, ends with good manners, and argues that poor inner city schools can be redeemed by ballroom dancing. The only thing wrong with this vision, I suspect, is that it works for the ballroom dancers but not for the gangbangers, who continue on their chosen careers. There is a more pessimistic view of urban high schools in another movie opening today, "American. P. grab if it weren't for its subtext — and its star.

Great casting and the film is quite good for a while but the opposites angle of the lead actors wasn't ideal. I had wished they actually pushed the tone for a more gritty action aimed one. Whether a movie is a rotten tomato or a brilliant work of art, if people are watching it, it's worth critiquing. A decent movie review should entertain, persuade and inform, providing an original opinion without giving away too much of the plot.
