WHISPER OF THE HEART is another beautiful work of art from Studio Ghibli with a screenplay from legendary Hayao Miyazaki. The lush, detailed scenery is enchanting, as is the storyline, in spite of a slow pace and seemingly unfocused beginning. Not unlike Takahata's Only Yesterday, which was released four years earlier, this film possesses a narrative that could easily have received a live-action. Whisper of the Heart is a movie like that, and BOY is it a good one. You've heard of the rare romance movie that both men and women like equally, this is one of them. Guys will like it because it isn't junk food. Whisper of the Heart's charming character barely get going when the story ends, making one wonder why so much empty space remained unfilled. Recommendation: For fans of other light Studio Ghibli movies.

If you enjoy the more slice of life-type anime movies, Whisper of the Heart is another to add to your folio. 'Whisper of the Heart' provides a great demonstration of the wide range of animation; showing it doesn't need magic, giant robots, big swords, and titanic monsters in order to be compelling. Indeed, the pacing of the movie is quite slow, and in terms of tangible, concrete happenings, very little does indeed happen in this movie. Whisper of the Heart is a lovely, inspiring movie. It is equal thirds love story, coming of age story and a reflection on what it means to be an artist. The young love between Shizuku and Seiji is rather cute, and it is quite comical to watch Shizuku struggle to align her dreams of the perfect man, with the realities of her heart.
