Unlike many pregnancy-themed horror movies, "Swallow," quite radically, doesn't linger on the monstrosity of the body and transformations that come with it. It is a film that inverses the typical trajectory by having a character begin in a state of subjugation, who slowly fights for ownership and freedom over her body and life. Rotten Tomatoes, home of the Tomatometer, is the most trusted measurement of quality for Movies & TV.

To invoke "empowerment" is not to suggest that Swallow is a pro-pica movie. It doesn't try to sell the disorder as something. Swallow boasts a superb central performance from Bennett as Hunter.

On the surface, Hunter appears to have it all, but a dark secret from her past seeps out in the form of a disorder called pica - a condition that has her compulsively swallowing inedible, and oftentimes life-threatening, objects. I could not endorse it, but for a counterpoint to my review, read the comments from other AWFJ members on why the film deserves this honor. SYNOPSIS: Hunter, a newly pregnant housewife, finds herself increasingly compelled to consume dangerous objects. Swallow has all the makings of a great, unsettling film, but the only things that go below the surface are the objects that Hunter swallows.
